The Porter's Place at Kootenai Creek
Welcome to the Porter’s Place in Stevensville, Montana, where Kootenai (pronounced koot' nee) Creek runs free through the backyard with St. Mary's peak in the background. On-site trips will be at the discretion of the instructors depending on subject matter. For instance, mountains, rivers, meadows, city-scapes, historic sites or wildlife refuges may be selected by Bob Phinney. Rodeos, horse farms or working ranches may be selected by Len McCann.
Canopies will shade the artists as they participate in classes. Bring hats or sunshades for open air scenic paint out field trips. ![]() Live music and a barbecue will be provided by the Porter family on Saturday evening. So if you play an instrument, be sure to bring it along to join in. You will appreciate the Montana twilight as it lingers late in July.
Bitterroot weather in July is the best of the summer, but could be hot, cool, stormy, or humid by turns. They say “if you don’t like the weather, wait 15 minutes”. Nights are normally much cooler and you will need a sweater or light jacket. Hiking trails are close by as are fly fishing, bicycle trails, horseback riding, and canoeing. The valley abounds in visual and performing artists. You are likely to meet some in class and should plan time for studio tours. |
